Here’s what you need to know this morning.
Abortion bill debate kicks off
The Standing Committee on Social issues will examine the draft legislation to decriminalise abortion, after the bill passed through the NSW Parliament’s Lower House last week.
The bill allows terminations to be performed up to 22 weeks, as well as later abortions, with the consent of two doctors.
The Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher, Anglican Archbishop Glenn Davies and Martyn Iles from the Australian Christian Lobby are expected to speak at today’s hearing.
NSW Law Society president Elizabeth Espinosa and former Director of Public Prosecutions Nicholas Cowdrey — who is representing the Council for Civil Liberties — are also due to speak.
The inquiry will report back to the Upper House next Tuesday.
Nurse allegedly sexually touched patient
A nurse has been charged after allegedly sexually touching a patient at a Sydney city hospital.
Police say the registered nurse, a 55-year-old man, touched a 31-year-old man without consent during an appointment in March.
The nurse was charged after an extensive investigation.
He was granted conditional bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court today.
Newcastle gas terminal deemed critical
A gas terminal at Newcastle that could supply 80 per cent of the state’s gas needs will today be given critical infrastructure status, meaning it has been deemed essential for everyday life.
The proposal for the new $589 million gas import terminal at Kooragang Island in the Port of Newcastle would include a connecting pipeline to the existing NSW gas supply network.
NSW sources 95 per cent of its gas supply from interstate, and experts predict a shortfall in coming years.
Despite being declared critical, the terminal will still be subject to detailed community consultation and a full environmental assessment.
