PNG considers developing shale gas industry

Papua New Guinea is looking to develop a shale gas industry, in a move the Government says could generate billions of dollars.

The story has been front-page news across the country today, but what exactly is shale gas, and how is it mined?

Shale gas is extracted through a process called fracking, which has been a controversial issue in Australia because of its potential environmental impacts.

Dr Gavin Mudd, a senior environmental engineer at Monash University, goes through the details on shale gas exploration.
