PNG PM delays response, opposition says address Hela LNG payments now
Updated
Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says Cabinet has delayed until next week a decision on any action over the protest in Hela province.
He says the government is in the process of addressing all mining-related issues.
Opposition leader Don Polye was one of three senior opposition figures that spoke to the press yesterday on the Hela protest.
He said the Government needed to act now.
Former petroleum and energy minister Ben Micah said the Government must pay the people what is owed for taking out their resource.
Bire Kimisopa said the landowners must be losing faith in the whole Investment Development Grant (IDG) process, having not been paid since a royalties deal was signed in 2008.
But Mr O’Neill told parliament yesterday the government needs to be fair to investors and landowners alike.
