Standoff between Hides landowners and PNG government over LNG royalties continues
Updated
Landowners in Hela Province are standing firm, refusing to give access to the PNG-LNG project in the highlands, despite pleas from a government delegation yesterday.
The landowners have shut off some of the gas supply to the main ExxonMobil plant, and they’re demanding face to face talks with Prime Minister Peter O’Neill because they’re owed more than a billion kina in royalties.
Police re-inforcements were flown in, ahead of what was described as a very tense meeting between landowners and the Petroleum Minister James Marape along with the managing director of government’s Mineral Resources Development Company Limited (MRDC), Philip Andialu.
The chairman of the Juha Landowners Association, Hengebe Haluya, says the meeting was a disappointment.
